Norbert Senf is one of the founding members of the Masonry Heater Association (MHA) and a pioneer in the development of modern masonry heaters in North America.
In 1985, Norbert developed the original HeatKit core system, recognized as the first masonry heater core of its kind in North America. His work helped make masonry heaters more accessible, consistent, and buildable for skilled masons across North America.
He also developed the first “white” bake oven system, a design where flames do not pass directly through the oven chamber. This innovation allows for cleaner baking conditions and greater versatility in masonry heater design.
Over the course of several decades, Norbert dedicated himself to the research, testing, and advancement of masonry heaters, including extensive work through Lopez Labs. His focus has always been on performance, safety, and refining the way masonry heaters are built and understood.
Through HeatKit and his broader contributions to the industry, Norbert has played a key role in shaping modern masonry heater design. His work continues to influence builders, educators, and homeowners across North America.
Justin Beyer is a third-generation bricklayer, following in the footsteps of his father, Carsten, and great uncle, Wilfred. He was introduced to the trade at a young age, spending weekends on job sites and learning the fundamentals of masonry firsthand.
At 14, Justin began working as a labourer during the summers, eventually enrolling in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) for the bricklayer trade while still in high school in 2002. From there, he built a broad foundation of experience across residential, commercial, and refractory masonry.
In 2017, Justin founded Compass Brick & Stone, and has been self-employed ever since, focusing on quality craftsmanship and long-term durability in every project.
After discovering masonry heaters, Justin quickly developed a deep respect for the tradition and performance behind them. That interest led him to attend WildAcres in 2025, further immersing himself in the masonry heater community and its knowledge base.
Today, Justin is proud to carry HeatKit forward, honouring the work that came before him while helping ensure that this system remains available and continues to grow here in Canada.
